Here, in this remote formerly corrupt village, big things have been happening for the last year or so. Local father and daughter team, Jennifer Abubakar Abena and Magudo Abubakar Abena have not only raised more than $1,500 for charity, but the good work they have achieved has resulted in some extensive changes. The new hospital has been completed and is now housing both male and female patients—in two separate wards—as well as performing medical operations in the two new theaters here.
In addition to these, there is also a new school, currently with over 250 student applications to deal with. So much so, that they are already talking of implementing the newly designed extension. It was originally planned for early next year, but with the interest being so high, plans have been brought forward. Not only are hospital and school thriving, but also the fresh drinking water center–designed to cleanse the surrounding water and purify it—will be a great success too.
Jennifer Abubakar Abena said, “We would like to thank everybody who has made any size of donation to this village. We hope that our work will continue to create and develop this village. Maybe one day it will become a thriving small town, with businesses and communication networks. And it will no longer be corrupt. That is our ultimate goal and we will, one day, make sure it happens.”
And she spoke the translated words of her father too, “We are so very pleased with the way things have gone. The generosity shown by people from all over the world has made it possible for us to not only wipe out disease and illiteracy in this village, but also it is a step forward for us to stamp out corruption too. I am so overjoyed and the money is still coming in.”
